If you travel often to another country, whether on business or for holiday, one of the best decisions you could make is to credit cards designed for international use.  The benefit is that instead of carrying a large amount of money, which puts you at risk for theft in some countries and worse in others, you could use international credit cards.  As long as the card is a MasterCard or Visa, which is accepted by millions of merchants around the world, you would have no problem.

Today, even smaller countries now accept international credit cards knowing this is a much safer and easier means for tourists and business travelers to carry money.  Therefore, no matter the hotel, rental car, restaurant, airline, retailer, etc, chances are the card would be accepted with no problem.  For years, people would choose traveler’s checks over cash, which is still a good option but again, with so many businesses now accepting international credit cards, taking a small piece of plastic along makes more sense.

Now, when looking at different options for international credit cards, there are some definite things to choose.  For one thing, you want to make sure the card of choice could be used for cash withdrawals at ATMs.  Otherwise, you could end up in a foreign country and find yourself short on cash for offering a tip at dinner, paying for a taxi ride, or even buying a small souvenir to take home.  Simply look for Visa or MasterCard international cards that have credit card benefits with cash withdrawal features.

In addition to being able to take out cash when needed, having a card that could be used with an ATM also gives you the opportunity to move money from your savings account to checking account, or to look at your bank’s current balance.  In fact, many ATMs used today, even in other countries make it possible for international credit cards to pull up transaction history.

Although carrying international credit cards while traveling would certainly be to your advantage, it is essential to understand the need for certain precautionary measures.  For starters, each country has a set of regulations specific to security.  Additionally, countries have strict laws pertaining to the use and misuse of international credit cards.  Then when you consider that the issuing company of the credit card would also have its own rules and regulations for card usage in another country, you want to make sure you know the requirements before traveling.

One specific aspect of international credit cards that you want to understand has to do with fees.  For instance, come issuers will charge extremely high fees whenever purchases are made in a foreign country so make sure you know what charges would apply to your card and the amount of each fee.  That way, you would have the ability to use the international credit cards accordingly to avoid being charged additional money.

You might look at several international credit cards that are set up with a rewards program.  In this case, when purchases are made using the credit card, you would earn cash or points that could then be redeemed.  Although a little harder to find, international credit cards such as this can be extremely beneficial.  Finally, make sure you never keep your PIN with any international credit cards you carry so if you were robbed or were to lose your purse or wallet, the card could not be used for cash withdrawal.
