Effect of Settlement Agreements on Your Credit History

Being a process born out of missed payments, debt settlement does have an effect on credit reports.Typically, it is an agreement between the consumer and creditor, supervised by a debt settlement company. The role of the debt settlement company is to ensure that both the parties agree on common terms and that the settlement process is concluded as soon as possible.[br]

When a creditor exempts a consumer for an amount higher than $600, the consumer needs to pay some tax on the exempted amount as the exemption is considered as ‘income’ for the consumer.

How do Settlement Companies Work and Debt Settlement Effect on Credit Reports

Any credit related activity is registered in the credit report. Debt settlement is considered the lesser evil than declaring bankruptcy.

Creditors record payments made by the consumers against debt settlement as ‘Charged off Settled’ or ‘Paid Settled,’ but never as ‘Paid in Full.’ Although a credit account is closed with debt settlement, this option raises concerns related to defaulters’ accounts.

Negative scores (including debt settlements) remain in the credit report for over seven years.[br]

Debt settlement professionals are hired by defaulting consumers to sort credit related matters. They get paid by the first payment that the consumer makes towards the debt settlement exercise. The role of a debt settlement company is to arrange a payment amount that is lower, and manageable in monthly payments. Once the total amount is collected, the debt settlement company starts the process of negotiating with the creditors.

Credit Score and Debt Settlement Effect on Credit Reports

Approach a settlement company only if you have a credit account that is at least 120 days delinquent in payments. Thus, the damage that a missed payment causes would already have been caused and enrolling into a debt settlement program won’t impact the credit score much.

However, if one enrolls for such a program while being current with payments, the credit score will drop significantly and would have a bad debt settlement effect on credit reports.
