Prepaid Credit Cards

When it comes to credit card offers, one of the types that have become increasingly popular over the years is prepaid credit cards.  Although virtually anyone would be welcomed to apply for a credit card such as this, prepaid credit cards are actually designed more for people with less than perfect credit that have a difficult or impossible time being approved for a standard type of credit card.

In today’s society, unless you have a credit card renting a car, holding a hotel room, booking an airline flight, etc is very difficult.  In fact, many rental car companies will not rent a car at all unless you have a credit card.  Although no money would be charged to the card, the number and associated information would be maintained on file in case the car was in an accident, damaged, stolen, etc.  Of course, with millions of people using the internet to shop, without a credit card, this too would be impossible.

The challenge is that if your credit were affected by a divorce, serious illness that caused you to lose time at work, or some other reason, then being approved for a standard credit card would be an uphill battle.  However, by choosing prepaid credit cards, you have the opportunity to benefit from all the services that a standard credit card offers with your bad credit and all.  The greatest benefit of all is that the process involved to secure prepaid credit cards is easy.

The way prepaid credit cards work is that you would be required to open an account with the issuer and then deposit money into that account.  Because you are putting money into an account, it is imperative that you work with a reputable bank or credit card company, one that you trust.  With the money in the account, the issuer would provide you with a credit card with a Visa or MasterCard logo.  With this, the card would be accepted around the world anywhere that Visa or MasterCard is accepted.

What makes prepaid credit cards so different is that the amount of money you deposit into the established account becomes the available balance for spending.  In other words, if you were to open an account with $500, the credit card the issuer hands you would be loaded with $500.  As you make purchases, money on the credit card would dwindle.  If wanted, you could deposit additional money into the account, at which time the prepaid card would again have an available balance.

Again, prepaid credit cards are most advantageous for people with poor credit but because it offers a controlled situation, these cards are the ideal solution for college students or young adults who are just establishing credit for the first time.  Since the money is secured by your deposit, you never have worries about overspending and you would never have problems financially by spending more than you can afford.  However, another huge benefit associated with prepaid credit cards is that unlike regular credit cards, you never pay interest, late fees, over limit fees, etc.

However, most banks and card companies that offer prepaid credit cards do charge a nominal fee for setting the account up but this typically averages $10.  Another thing is that each time the credit card diminishes or reaches a zero balance and you again want to deposit money into the account, you would be charged a small fee.  However, with so many benefits in using prepaid credit cards, these fees are a very small sacrifice.

Finally, if you have bad credit, using prepaid credit cards gives you the chance to restore it.  The reason is that the banks or card companies that issue prepaid credit cards report to one or all three of the main credit bureaus.  This means each time a purchase is made and money is in the account to cover, your credit report improves.  Then, if you are using a credit card of this type to establish credit, the same theory applies.  With the card information, as well as the way in which you manage the card being reported to the reporting bureaus you are slowly building a positive credit history
